Foreword
- Bill Boddy, MBE.
"A
considerable time ago I received a remarkable manuscript describing the entire
competition participation of Austin Sevens in events not only in this country
but those the world over, from 1922 to 1939, with technical details of many of
the cars so used.
The only clue then was that this incredibly industrious work
was that of a lady identified simply as CB, which was even more puzzling. I have
since discovered that this enthusiastic person is Canning Brown, who as a child
had illicitly taken an Aunt's Chummy A7 for a drive that had ended up against a
hayrick. This resulted in painful punishment, when parents where permitted to
use reasonable restraint of this kind before Britain became a Nanny State. But
afterwards she was given driving lessons which inspired her to own A7's of her
own, at first a worn-out Chummy and a tired Gordon England Supersports model.
The girl's family employer was a friend of those celebrated
racing drivers Chris Staniland and George Duller and visits to Brooklands gave
the now enthusiastic A7 follower the chance to speak to and correspond with
Austin competitors. After the war she joined the 750 Club and owned an Ulster
Austin and an MGB.
Her compilation of this very complete account of Sir Herbert
Austin's immortal little cars, from a Chummy's initial appearance at Shelsley
Walsh to the full racing versions designed by Murray Jamieson, stemmed from this
early interest.
There have been books and articles covering about every
aspect of Austin hostory, but this one is something no-one who appreciates how
well and comprehensively the gallant 750cc cars from Birmingham took on other
makes, can happily be without."
